General Milley says calls to Chinese counterpart were to reassure Beijing that US would not attack

A top US military official has defended two phone calls he made to a Chinese counterpart in the final days of former president Donald Trump’s administration to reassure Beijing that the US would not launch an attack on the country. General Mark Milley called General Li Zuocheng of the Chinese People's Liberation Army on October 30, 2020, four days before the election that Trump lost. The second call was on January 8, 2021, less than two weeks before Trump’s successor Joe Biden was inaugurated and just two days after Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol. Milley testified during a hearing before the US Senate Armed Services Committee on September 28, 2021, in Washington.
