UN votes to condemn Russian invasion of Ukraine, but China again stays silent
The United Nations General Assembly voted on March 2, 2022, to condemn Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. One hundred forty-one countries voted to denounce the attacks ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin, with 5 members opposing and 35 abstaining, including Beijing. The votes were cast during a special emergency session, which was only the 11th in UN history. The special session is a rare procedural move that allows the body to take up a resolution on matters of war and peace when the UN Security Council is unable to reach a unanimous consensus.
