Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised US President Donald Trump’s efforts to end the war in Ukraine. Putin made the remarks on August 14, 2025, more than three years after Moscow launched an invasion of its neighbour. As the two leaders prepared for a pivotal US-Russia summit on August 15 in Alaska, Trump expressed optimism about the possibility of an end to hostilities. In a short video released by the Kremlin, Putin said “long-term conditions of peace between our countries, in Europe and in the world as a whole” could be reached under an agreement with the US on nuclear arms control. Russia and the United States have by far the world’s biggest nuclear arsenals.
