The terror attack in the Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, killing over 40 Indian paramilitary policemen, is by far the deadliest assault since the proxy war between India and Pakistan began about three decades ago.

This attack claimed by the Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), a terror group banned by the United Nations, was carried out by a suicide bomber, who drove a car laden with more than 60kg of high explosives into a bus that was ferrying paramilitary personnel towards Srinagar along the main national highway.

Kashmir is divided and separately administered by India and Pakistan but both claim the entire state as their territory, and many people who live there want either independence or to be part of Pakistan.

The JeM operates from within Pakistan with impunity and the anger and anguish in India is palpable.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed to “isolate” Pakistan for supporting terrorism and withdrawn the most favoured nation (MFN) status accorded to its neighbour – meaning it can now increase customs duties to any level on goods coming from across the border.
