Three Russians accused of dancing and posing disrespectfully at a sacred temple in Bali have been arrested as Indonesia cracks the whip on foreign visitors behaving badly to safeguard the image of its tourism industry.

Senior immigration officer Hendra Setiawan said the travellers – a man and two women – were caught in the island resort’s Ubud district following reports from the public about the trio’s questionable behaviour at the Pengubengan Temple in Besakih.

Hendra added they were being held at an immigration office for further investigation and authorities have contacted the temple management for more information about the incident.

He did not elaborate on the Russians’ behaviour, however, or why it was considered improper, Indonesia’s Antara news agency reported on Monday.
