A video showing a man in southern India’s Telangana state dousing a woman in petrol and threatening to set fire to her and himself after being rejected has sparked outrage in the country.

The incident occurred outside the victim’s workplace on Monday where Sundar Pramod was waiting to meet her, The Siasat Daily reported.

In the two-minute CCTV clip circulated on X, Pramod is seen approaching two burka-clad women and speaking to them. One woman walks on and looks back as he reportedly asks the other why she spurned him while wiping his eyes.

The man then proceeds to splash himself and his love interest with what is believed to be petrol from a plastic bottle, declaring that he intended to set them both ablaze. The 23-year-old raises her hands and attempts to move away from him.

The stand-off ended after a passer-by confronted Pramod, who was later handed over to police, according to local media.

Police have classified the case as “attempted murder” following a complaint from the woman.
