A would-be burglar in Thailand thought he was in with a ghost of a chance to steal from a gold shop in a mall in Chiang Mai.

It was the perfect plan, or so he thought: hide inside the mall until closing time and sneak out from the shop in the Mueang district with his loot. He even disguised himself with a ‘Ghostface’ mask from the Scream film franchise and wore a black cloak in a bid to evade capture.

There was one glitch: once he got into the shop at night, he could not get out.

The next morning on Tuesday, employees of the shop discovered the break-in and locked up the bungling burglar before calling the police.

The 21-year-old suspect, Aesara, whose surname was withheld, admitted to police officers at the scene about his attempt to steal from the shop, according to a report by The Nation online newspaper.

“Aesara had arrived at the mall, parking his motorcycle at a nearby petrol station. By 5pm, he slipped into the mall, hiding until closing,” said Yanapol Phatthanachai, Mae Ping police superintendent, according to a report by Thaiger newspaper.
