Two siblings allegedly racing each other in luxury cars have sparked fresh outrage in Malaysia after a multivehicle crash in Johor state killed five people – including four members of the same family – reigniting debate over what the government itself has called a “serious public health challenge” on the country’s roads.

Police arrested the 19-year-old driver of a Mercedes-Benz A250, identified by local media as a Singapore university student, in connection with Monday’s crash on the Kluang – Simpang Renggam highway in Johor. A urine test came back negative for drugs.

The suspect’s brother, a 22-year-old at the wheel of a BMW 530e, also died in the collision, which left several others injured, including two children.

Kluang district police chief Bahrin Mohd Noh said the BMW was spotted travelling “fast and recklessly” alongside the Mercedes-Benz before it lost control, crossed into the opposite lane, struck four cars and plunged into a ravine.

Four people in one of those vehicles died at the scene, police said.

“Initial investigations found that a BMW 530e driven by a 22-year-old local man was travelling from Kluang town towards Simpang Renggam,” Bahrin told reporters on Tuesday.
