Businesses and state agencies in Singapore and Chongqing on Wednesday sealed about 30 deals to boost trade and government cooperation, with the Chinese megacity’s top boss Chen Miner cheering on the growing links.
Chen, the Communist Party chief for Chongqing and a close aide of President Xi Jinping, is in Singapore on a four-day visit that began on Tuesday. He is expected to call on Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat and Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean before returning to China on Friday.

Chen is among the Chongqing leaders Singapore has cultivated in recent years. Bo Xilai, the son of veteran Chinese leader Bo Yibo and the city’s party secretary from 2007 to 2012, had close ties to the city-state but was purged in a sensational corruption scandal.

Then two years ago, the municipality’s new leader Sun Zhengcai was abruptly removed from his position. The former rising star was sentenced to life imprisonment for graft last year.

Minister for Trade and Industry Chan Chun Sing, who invited Chen to Singapore, said the city state and Chongqing would further cooperate in three areas, including trade and deepening understanding between leaders and officials.

They also agreed to boost digital connectivity between the two cities: telecoms firms have launched a new channel to support data-driven businesses with the promise of a better online networking experience.
