Some 2.63 million Singaporeans headed to the polls on Saturday in a general election that served as a defining test for Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s leadership, just less than a year after he took over from Lee Hsien Loong.
A total of 92 parliamentary seats were contested across 32 constituencies in the country’s 14th general election since independence after significant electoral boundary changes were made earlier.
Five seats in the Marine Parade group representation constituency (GRC) already fell into People’s Action Party (PAP) hands after the Workers’ Party (WP) made the shock move not to contest there, marking the first walkover in the city state since 2011.
Yet the ruling PAP on its campaign trail appeared to face strong opposition in the northeast from WP, and in the west from the Progress Singapore Party and Singapore Democratic Party.
All eyes had been on whether the opposition could expand its foothold in parliament and cause the PAP’s vote share to slip under 60 per cent for the first time since 1965, or if the PAP’s dominance could be shaken in the face of geopolitical uncertainty and a stronger appetite for diverse voices in parliament.

With polling closed at 8pm on Saturday, candidates and their supporters will be gathering to await the election results, which will be read out by returning officer Han Kok Juan throughout the night.
Polling opened at 8am, when some voters braved flash floods and stormy weather to cast their ballots early. At noon, election authorities said nearly half, or 48 per cent, of the 2.6 million eligible electors in contested divisions had cast their vote.

Many voters praised the efficiency of the voting process, aided by an Elections Department website that allowed them to check real-time queue lengths at their local polling stations.
In the 2020 election amid the Covid-19 pandemic, voting hours were extended to 10pm after initial safety restrictions, such as having voters use hand sanitiser and disposable gloves, caused long queues.


Vote-counting action begins


As ballot papers are being brought from polling stations to counting centres, PAP supporters and candidates are gathering in three stadiums across Singapore: Bedok Stadium, Yio Chu Kang Stadium and Bukit Gombak Stadium.
Meanwhile, the WP and their supporters are expected to fill Serangoon Stadium, while the SDP will be watching the results closely at the Ministry of Education Evans Road Stadium in Bukit Timah.
The Progress Singapore Party (PSP) says it is not holding a watch party for supporters, but will hold a press conference once the results come out.



Supporters gather

A recount is automatically triggered if the margin between candidates is 2 per cent or less of the total votes cast.
While the 2020 election saw no recounts, the 2015 poll, held after the death of founding prime minister Lee Kuan Yew, had a recount in the Workers’ Party’s Aljunied GRC.
The five-member slate, led by WP stalwart Low Thia Khiang, won with 51 per cent of the votes – a margin of just 2,626 votes over the PAP team.
In the 2011 election, a recount was held in the Potong Pasir single-seat constituency. The PAP’s Sitoh Yih Pin won back the ward, which had been held by opposition veteran Chiam See Tong since 1984.
Chiam’s wife, Lina Chiam, ran against Sitoh and lost by only 114 votes.

WP supporters have begun trickling into a Hougang coffee shop at Block 322, a traditional gathering point.
Supporters are decked out in WP blue, carrying the party’s signature hammer inflatables and other paraphernalia as they gather to watch the results unfold.

One former Hougang resident, Steven Hong, 41, says it is his tradition to gather with old friends at the coffee shop to watch the election results.
“We need to have more voices in parliament, especially because the PAP has done things that are quite questionable,” he says, adding that he is watching hot wards such as Punggol, Tampines and Jalan Kayu.

Here’s a snapshot of the parliament seat distribution across Singapore’s constituencies, carved up into group representation constituencies (GRCs) and single-member constituencies (SMCs).




Battle lines at a glance

Candidates from both the ruling and opposition parties are arriving at counting centres across Singapore to observe the vote count after polling closed at 8pm.
Minister of Culture, Community and Youth Edwin Tong, who is running in East Coast GRC against a WP team led by Yee Jenn Jong, has been spotted at Opera Estate Primary School.
Tong tells local reporters that it is still “early days” and there is a “long night ahead of us”.
Meanwhile, WP star candidate Harpreet Singh is seen arriving at Yusof Ishak Secondary School, a counting centre for Punggol GRC.
Singh leads a fresh-faced WP team against a PAP one led by Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong in what is one of the most hotly contested battlegrounds of the election.

The PAP’s Liang Eng Hwa has come out ahead of the SDP’s Paul Tambyah in a hotly contested rematch in the Bukit Panjang single seat, an early sample count has indicated.
The sample count, which has a 4 percentage point margin of error and is used as an early indicator of the final official election result, has placed Liang ahead, with 62 per cent of the vote, while Tambyah has the remaining 38 per cent.

In the 2020 election, Liang won 53.73 per cent of the vote, about 2,500 more votes than Tambyah, who is an infectious diseases expert.
Analysts have called the single seat in the west of Singapore one to watch since electoral boundaries had not been redrawn there, and Tambyah had continued his ground work in the estate.


PAP ahead in Bukit Panjang rematch

The PAP’s Poh Li San could be coming out on top in the newly carved-out single-member constituency of Sembawang West, securing 53 per cent of the vote ahead of her Singapore Democratic Party opponent Chee Soon Juan, according to an early sample count.
Poh, a former helicopter pilot and ex-MP of Sembawang GRC, made her electoral debut in 2020 as part of the Sembawang GRC team.
Her opponent, SDP chief Chee, has been gunning for a breakthrough in Sembawang West – his latest bid in a decades-long political career marked by persistent efforts to enter parliament since the 1990s.
He stepped into the political arena under the SDP banner in 1992, and was part of the line-up taking part in the by-election for Marine Parade GRC. He gained public attention at the time as the first university lecturer to join an opposition party.
In 1993, Chee went on a hunger strike to protest a dismissal at the National University of Singapore, where he had been a lecturer.



Disappointment again for SDP’s Chee Soon Juan?

WP chief Pritam Singh, who is also leader of the opposition, looks on track to defend his stronghold of Aljunied GRC against the incumbent’s team with 59 per cent of the sample count.
Singh’s team also includes WP chair Sylvia Lim and MP Gerald Giam, while former Aljunied MP Faisal Manap, is contesting Tampines GRC this time.

His team was up against Serangoon branch chair Chan Hui Yuh, unionist Jagathishwaran Rajo, urban planning consultancy director Daniel Liu, company director Adrian Ang and dental surgeon Faisal Abdul Aziz.
The WP team, led by then party chief Low Thia Khiang, first claimed the GRC in 2011.
The party has held on to it since then, defending its perch in the 2020 general election after receiving 59.93 per cent of the vote against the PAP.
It was also the first GRC won by an opposition party since the group system was introduced in 1988.


Opposition leader Pritam Singh on track to retain Aljunied


PAP candidate Desmond Choo has taken a narrow early lead over WP candidate Kenneth Foo in the newly formed Tampines Changkat SMC, according to a released sample count.
The sample count, which has a 4 percentage point margin of error and is used as an early indicator of the final official election result, has put Choo ahead, with 55 per cent of the vote, while Foo holds the remaining 45 per cent.
Tampines Changkat SMC is one of the six new single-seat wards created in the recent electoral boundaries review, and was carved out of Tampines GRC.
Choo was formerly an MP of Tampines GRC who oversaw the Tampines Changkat division after he was elected in 2015.
Meanwhile, Foo had previously contested in East Coast GRC in the 2020 election, where his party had put up a strong fight against the PAP team, led by former deputy prime minister Heng Swee Keat.




PAP set to secure Tampines Changkat SMC

Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong is likely to retain his seat in parliament, avoiding an upset from WP star candidate Harpreet Singh in the newly formed constituency of Punggol.
A sample count, which has a 4 percentage point margin of error and is used as an early indicator of the final official election result, has put Gan’s team ahead, with 54 per cent of the vote, while Singh’s team has the remaining 46 per cent in the constituency with some 123,600 voters.
Central to Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s campaign message was his government’s need to maintain a strong team of cabinet ministers, especially Gan, to face global uncertainties.
Wong had labelled Gan his “Taskforce Man”, making reference to how Gan had been on the ministerial taskforce for the country’s Covid-19 response and how he is currently chairing a taskforce on economic resilience following the “Liberation Day” tariff announcements.
Gan, who is also the trade and industry minister, was the biggest shock on Nomination Day, making an eleventh-hour switch from his seat in Chua Chu Kang, located in the west, to Punggol in the northeast, to lock horns with the team led by Singh, a senior counsel.
Gan’s four-man slate comprises Senior Minister of State Janil Puthucheary, Minister of State Sun Xueling and labour MP Yeo Wan Ling.



‘Taskforce Man’ Gan Kim Yong likely to stay

Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong is set to comfortably retain his Ang Mo Kio stronghold, after an early count indicated he had 79 per cent of the vote in a three-cornered contest.
Lee, the son of Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore’s first prime minister, led the country for 20 years from 2004 to last year before handing over to Lawrence Wong.
Lee has been an MP in Ang Mo Kio since 1991 and leads a team of five comprising newcomer Jasmin Lau, Victor Lye, who lost twice in Aljunied, and incumbent MPs Darryl David and Nadia Ahmad Samdin.
His team is going up against the Singapore United Party (SUP) and the People’s Power Party (PPP).



SM Lee Hsien Loong comfortably ahead in stronghold Ang Mo Kio

Vivian Balakrishnan, Singapore’s top diplomat, is set to defend his seat in Holland-Bukit Timah GRC, after a sample count saw his team take a whopping 80 per cent of the vote.
Balakrishnan, who has been the foreign minister since 2015, has been the anchor minister in Holland-Bukit Timah since 2006.
His four-man team, which comprises Senior Minister of State Sim Ann, Christopher de Souza and Edward Chia, face a team from Red Dot United.

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong looks set for a comfortable win against the SDP in his Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC.
Wong, who has been anchor minister in the northern GRC since 2015, won the preliminary sample count with 74 per cent of the vote. The sample count has an error margin of 4 percentage points and is not the official result.
Wong leads a four-man team that stayed intact following the previous election. They comprise senior minister of state Zaqy Mohamad, Alex Yam and Hany Soh.

The PAP team led by Desmond Lee, the city state’s minister of national development, is set to defend its five-member constituency against the PSP slate led by Tan Cheng Bock, according to the sample count for West Coast Jurong West GRC.
The sample count, which has a 4 percentage point margin of error and is used as an early indicator of the final official election result, has placed Lee’s team ahead, with 61 per cent of the vote, while Tan’s team has the remaining 39 per cent.
In the 2020 general election, the PAP team won the constituency – previously known as West Coast GRC – with 51.68 per cent of the vote against a team led by Tan. It was the slimmest win for the ruling party in 2020.
Political observers had identified West Coast Jurong West GRC as a key battleground this election, with the PSP fielding their A-team – including Tan, party chief Leong Mun Wai and vice-chair Hazel Poa – in the contest.

The constituency underwent significant boundary changes this election, taking in about 41,000 voters from Jurong GRC – a former PAP stronghold and one of its best-performing wards.
Tan was a PAP MP in Ayer Rajah SMC for 26 years before leaving the party and later founding the PSP in 2019.
In his final contest for the PAP in 2001, he won against the Democratic Progressive Party’s Tan Lead Shake by the widest margin in that election with 88 per cent.
As an MP, he spoke up against several government policies, including streaming policies in schools, the push for foreign talent and the nominated MP scheme.


PAP leads in the West

Labour chief Ng Chee Meng could be set to make his return to parliament after he pipped WP newcomer Andre Low in the sample count for the Jalan Kayu single seat.
According to the sample count, which has a 4 percentage point margin of error and is used as an early indicator of the final official election result, Ng leads the polls with 52 per cent of the vote, while Low has the remaining 48 per cent.
Ng, a former cabinet minister, was voted out of parliament in 2020 after losing to the fresh-faced WP team in Sengkang.
The contest in Jalan Kayu, a new single ward for this election that was carved out of PAP stronghold Ang Mo Kio, has been closely watched, with opposition parties criticising Ng’s involvement in the foiled acquisition of NTUC Income by German giant Allianz.

The government last October intervened to block the US$1.6 billion sale and amended the law after public outcry that Income would not be able to continue its social mission of providing affordable insurance to Singaporeans.
Ng, who is the secretary general of NTUC, said during the campaign that the deal was done in good faith and vowed that it would do better.
Meanwhile, Low faced controversy of his own after screenshots of his messages in a private group chat surfaced.
Low used expletives to criticise a wide range of individuals and subjects, including Singapore companies and a resident he served while volunteering.
Low later apologised for the inappropriate language and said: “I have always been opinionated. I hold strong convictions. About Singapore, and how we can be so much better. These same convictions are also what pushed me to step up to contest as a Workers’ Party candidate.”



Ng Chee Meng ahead of WP’s Andre Low in early count

Minister for Law and Home Affairs K Shanmugam has come out on top in an early poll for his group constituency in Nee Soon, emerging with 74 per cent of the vote.
Shanmugam, who leads a team of four newcomers in this election – Goh Hanyan, Syed Harun Alhabsyi, Jackson Lam and Lee Hui Ying – faces a team led by Red Dot United chief Ravi Philemon.
This is Shanmugam’s ninth election, after joining politics in the 1988 elections. He has been an MP in Nee Soon since its formation in 2011.



Home Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam set to retain Nee Soon GRC

Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Masagos Zulkifli looks set to retain his seat in Tampines GRC, a key battleground between the ruling PAP and the WP, despite four parties throwing their hats into the ring.
The sample count, which has a 4 percentage point margin of error and is used as an early indicator of the final official election result, has put the PAP team led by Masagos ahead, with 53 per cent of the vote.
The WP has 46 per cent, while the other two contestants, the National Solidarity Party and the People’s Power Party, have 0 per cent and 1 per cent of the sample count, respectively.

Malay-Muslim issues came to the fore in the constituency with 147,900 voters, as many pitted Masagos against the team led by WP’s Faisal Manap, who moved out of his stronghold Aljunied in a bid to build on the party’s northeastern movement.
Some 25 per cent of voters in Tampines are estimated to be from the Malay community, higher than the national resident population of about 13.5 per cent.
The PAP five-man team comprises: Masagos, senior minister of state Koh Poh Koon; senior parliamentary secretary Baey Yam Keng; and two newcomers – former chief of army David Neo and marketing professor Charlene Chen.


Masagos set to stay put


The PAP team, led by Edwin Tong, minister for culture, community and youth, has taken an early lead over the WP slate helmed by Yee Jenn Jong, a former non-constituency member, in East Coast GRC, an early sample count has found.
The sample count, which has a 4 percentage point margin of error and is used as an early indicator of the final official election result, has put Tong ahead, with 59 per cent of the vote, while Yee secured 41 per cent.
East Coast was a closely watched battleground in the last general election. The PAP team, led by Heng Swee Keat, then deputy prime minister, narrowly retained the ward with 53.41 per cent of the vote against the WP.
Heng announced his retirement from his post shortly after nomination day, and Edwin Tong, who had previously been overseeing the Joo Chiat ward since 2015, was fielded to lead the PAP team in East Coast.
Meanwhile, Yee marked his fourth electoral contest and what he has declared as his final campaign.

Workers’ Party candidates are gathering at Serangoon Stadium for a watch party with their supporters.

WP Secretary General Pritam Singh, contesting Aljunied GRC, arrives at the stadium. Singh, who is also leader of the opposition, looks on track to defend his stronghold of Aljunied.

Alia Mattar, Alexis Dang and Louis Chua are among those spotted at the stadium, alongside Jamus Lim and Abdul Muhaimin, two of the party’s candidates for Sengkang GRC.

WP star candidate Harpreet Singh, leading the party’s team in Punggol GRC, is seen greeting Michael Thng, contesting Tampines GRC.

The party’s supporters also fill the stadium to await the official results.

PAP wins Bukit Panjang rematch

Speaking to reporters at the PSP’s headquarters, party chief Leong Mun Wai says that the group will review its strategy and “regroup ourselves” before the next election.
“The results are very shocking to us, but the people have spoken,” he said, assuring Singaporeans that the party will “continue to work hard to find out their needs and continue to serve Singapore”.
The party, which was founded by PAP defector Tan Cheng Bock, looks unlikely to secure any seats or NCMP seats, according to the sample count.
PSP’s Leong and its vice chairperson Hazel Poa were on the party’s West Coast GRC slate that lost to a PAP team led by former transport minister S Iswaran in the 2020 general election.
It was the narrowest loss that election, which allowed the party to send Leong and Poa into parliament as non-constituency members of parliament.




PSP’s Leong Mun Wai: results ‘very shocking’, will still serve Singapore

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has won his Marsiling-Yew Tee group representative constituency (GRC) comfortably against the SDP with 73.46 per cent of the vote.
“This is my first election as prime minister and as secretary general of the PAP,” he says. “We are grateful once again for your strong mandate and we will honour it.”
Wong leads the four-man team which stayed intact from the previous election, comprising Senior Minister of State Zaqy Mohamad, Alex Yam and Hany Soh.

Labour chief Ng Chee Meng will return to parliament after he narrowly pipped WP newcomer Andre Low for the Jalan Kayu single seat.
Ng won 51.47 per cent of the vote with a margin of just 806 votes, while Low has the remaining 48.53 per cent.
“We will build a Jalan Kayu that is stronger, kinder and more inclusive,” says Ng to PAP supporters, as he thanks volunteers.
“It was a very hard fight and without all of you this outcome would not have been possible.”
Speaking to his supporters, Low says: “This campaign was never just about being a seat in parliament. It was about offering a different, fresh perspective, asking important questions and starting necessary conversations about accountability, affordability and the Singapore we want to build together.”
Low has vowed to continue to walk the ground and will return to contest again in five years with the WP’s support.
Ng, a former cabinet minister, was voted out of parliament in 2020 after losing to the fresh-faced WP team in Sengkang.
The contest in Jalan Kayu has been closely watched with opposition parties criticising Ng’s involvement in the foiled acquisition of NTUC Income by German giant Allianz.

Singh’s team also includes WP chair Sylvia Lim and MP Gerald Giam, while former Aljunied MP Faisal Manap, is contesting Tampines GRC this time.
It was also the first GRC won by an opposition party since the group system was introduced in 1988.

The PAP’s Poh Li San has emerged victorious in the newly carved-out single-member constituency of Sembawang West, securing 53.19 per cent of the vote against her Singapore Democratic Party opponent Chee Soon Juan, who garnered 46.81 per cent.
This marks another disappointing defeat for the SDP chief after a decades-long political career and dogged efforts to enter parliament.

The PAP’s candidate Desmond Choo has defeated WP candidate Kenneth Foo in the newly formed Tampines-Changkat SMC.
Choo won 56.17 per cent of the vote, while Foo has the remaining 43.83 per cent.
Tampines-Changkat SMC is one of the six new single-seat wards created in the recent electoral boundaries review, and was carved out of Tampines GRC.

The PAP team led by Desmond Lee, minister of national development, has defended its five-member West Coast Jurong West GR against PSP’s slate led by Tan Cheng Bock.
Lee’s team won 60.01 per cent of the vote, while Tan’s team has the remaining 39.99 per cent.

Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong has held on to his seat in parliament, avoiding an upset from WP star candidate Harpreet Singh in the newly formed constituency Punggol.
Gan’s PAP team secured 55.17 per cent per cent of the vote, while their WP opponent clinched 44.83 per cent.
“Work is not done, there is a lot more to do and we are facing an imminent crisis, a global crisis… and we need to work together in unison. We must stay united so that we are able to face the challenges of tomorrow,” said Gan, addressing supporters at a watch party for supporters.
At a different watch party in Serangoon, Singh told supporters: “The road to change is never straight forward. There will be setbacks, there will be disappointments on the way, but still, we believe change is going to come to Singapore.”
Gan’s four-man slate comprises Senior Minister of State Janil Puthucheary, Minister of State Sun Xueling and labour MP Yeo Wan Ling.

PAP has secured 67 of the 97 seats in parliament, passing the two-third mark that will let it pass constitutional changes, with voting results still coming in.
The party has maintained this majority since independence in 1965.

Singapore’s top diplomat Vivian Balakrishnan has defended his seat in Holland-Bukit Timah GRC with his team securing a whopping 79.29 per cent of the vote.
Balakrishnan, who has been foreign minister since 2015, has been the anchor minister in Holland-Bukit Timah since 2006.
His four-man team which comprises Senior Minister of State Sim Ann, Christopher De Souza and Edward Chia face a team from Red Dot United.

Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Masagos Zulkifli has retained his seat in Tampines GRC, a key battleground between the ruling PAP and the WP amid a four-cornered fight.
The PAP team led by Masagos won 52.02 per cent of the vote. WP has 47.37 per cent, while the other two contestants, the National Solidarity Party and People’s Power Party have 0.18 per cent and 0.43 per cent of the final count, respectively.

The PAP team, led by Edwin Tong, minister for culture, community and youth, has defeated the WP slate helmed by Yee Jenn Jong, a former non-constituency member, in East Coast GRC.
Tong won 58.76 per cent of the vote, while Yee secured 41.24 per cent.
East Coast was a closely watched battleground in the last general election.



PAP wins the East

The ruling PAP has secured a resounding 65.57 per cent of the popular vote, surpassing earlier expectations from analysts that the party was in for a tough electoral ride.
Of the total 97 parliamentary seats on offer, the PAP won 87 seats, allowing them well above the two-thirds majority needed to pass constitutional amendments.
The WP won the remaining 10 parliamentary seats.

A total of 2,429,281 votes were cast in Singapore, the election department says.
This makes up 92.47 per cent of the 2,627,026 registered electors in all contested electoral divisions.

In a post-election press conference, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong opens his remarks in English by depicting a world that is characterised by economic slowdown and fundamental shifts in the international order while Singapore undergoes a leadership transition.
“I am deeply humble and grateful for the results Singaporeans have given the PAP are clear and strong mandate to govern,” Wong says.

Wong acknowledges that the Workers’ Party in particular has fielded an impressive slate of candidates and notes that it will have 10 elected seats and two non-constituency MP seats.
“On some issues, we may have to agree to disagree, but at the same time, we must, where critical national issues are concerned, uphold a shared responsibility to come together and to advance Singapore’s interests together in this changed and turbulent world.”



‘Agree to disagree’: Wong on opposition

Wong notes that there have been signs of a slowdown in the city state’s economy, so it will be treated as a priority, adding that the government will do more to “get Singapore through the storm safely”.
Describing Singapore as an “underdog” in the international arena, Wong says that the real contest is not between the PAP and the opposition but Singapore and the “turbulent world and the multitude of challenges facing us in this contest”.
“Singapore is the underdog we have always been, and we will continue to be, despite what we have achieved today. So to improve our chances, we cannot afford to fight one another,” he says, referring to attempts to influence voters to vote along racial-religious lines.



Government to ‘get Singapore through storm safely’: Wong

Lawrence Wong deflects a question on the future role of labour chief Ng Chee Meng in his cabinet, saying that another press conference on the line-up will be held later.
“Ng is still the labour chief, and in previous cabinet lineups, the labour chief would potentially have a role in cabinet. So as I said, we will see,” he says.
He stops short of confirming if Ng, who won in Jalan Kayu by the smallest margin of 51.47 per cent against WP newcomer Andre Low, would be in the line-up.

In response to a question, Masagos Zulkifli, whose team secured the hotly contested Tampines GRC, calls for unity and assures voters that he will redouble efforts to help the Malay-Muslim community. His comments come after the PAP team led by him won 52.02 per cent of the votes in Tampines - one of the lowest winning margins in the GE.
His Tampines district has a higher than national average Malay-Muslim population, which makes up about 25 per cent of its residents.


Masagos pledges to do more for Malay-Muslim community

In a statement on Sunday morning, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says the two countries share a “strong and enduring strategic partnership and a commitment to a secure, free and prosperous Indo-Pacific region”.
Washington looks forward to continuing to work closely with the newly elected government and Wong to boost economic growth, bilateral defence and security ties, he adds.

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong thanks voters in his Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC in a social media post. “I am deeply grateful for the trust you’ve placed in me and my team. We will honour it by working even harder for you!”
Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, on social media, also thanks his voters and activists for their contributions over the years. “In these troubled times, we will walk with you to keep you safe, protect your jobs, and secure a brighter future for you and your children in Singapore.”
Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh meanwhile has posted a picture of the full slate of WP candidates, saying: “Proud of this team! Thank you for your encouragement and support!”
