Singapore’s parliament backs motion deeming Pritam Singh unfit to be opposition leader
The 11 WP MPs present opposed the motion, while the rest of the House, mainly PAP MPs, voted to deem Singh unsuitable for his role

The heated discussion in Singapore’s typically sterile parliament, which saw WP MPs repeatedly calling points of order, centred on Leader of the House Indranee Rajah’s motion calling on parliament to consider that Singh’s “conviction and conduct render him unsuitable to continue as the Leader of the Opposition” and to express regret at his conduct, which was “dishonourable and unbecoming” of an MP.
Political analysts told This Week in Asia that Wong was likely to remove the title and its benefits from Singh, and eyes would be on the WP’s disciplinary panel, which the party had earlier said would be formed to determine if Singh had contravened the party’s constitution.
On Wednesday, only the 11 WP MPs present disagreed with the motion, while the rest of the house, predominantly People’s Action Party MPs who occupy 87 of the 97 elected seats, supported the motion.
