A figure of an elephant covered with pancakes was built in celebration of Maslenitsa. Also known as Pancake Week, Maslenitsa is an Eastern Slavic holiday celebrated during the week before Great Lent – the most important fasting season for the Eastern Orthodox Church. 

In other parts of the world, a similar holiday that involves gorging on pancakes and other filling foods is Shrove Tuesday, also known as Mardi Gras (“Fat Tuesday” in French”).
