Behan overcame the odds to make it to the Olympics.

My favorite sports star would be Kieran Behan - an English born gymnast who represents Ireland Internationally the first Irish gymnast to qualify for the Olympics. Kieran’s most astonishing sporting moment would, in fact, be his journey to becoming a successful gymnast. Now imagine you have been told you will never walk again. Well, that was what Kieran was told by the doctors after he had removed a cancerous tumor in his thigh at the age of 10. However, he had always been so interested in gymnastics that he was even determined to become an Olympian champion himself.

Kieran couldnt even walk and was confined to a wheelchair but still had hope that he could be the Olympian champion. 15 months in a wheelchair and Kieran trained regularly in the gym and a few months later, he slipped from a high bar sustaining a severe injury on his head. This injury has unfortunately caused him to have constant blackouts and he even missed an academic year. During this long road to recovery, he had to retrain his brain and sustain his co-ordination. It took him 3 long years to pick himself back up and return to where he had been before the accident.

Then another blow came. His knee snapped just after he had been selected for the European Championships. During that time he has said it was about time to give up. But, he never did. Instead, he succeeded in becoming the Challenge World Cup Floor champion in 2011 and accomplished his dream that he had brought with him ever since he was 10 - he was qualified for the London 2012 Olympics. After all the trauma, the blackouts, the pain, and the setbacks, he had become an Olympic athlete. And that to me is a truly inspirational and an example of a well deserved Olympian spirit. He had aspired many to keep doing what they want to achieve even if others tell you it is merely impossible.
