It is important to have good manners. Others will respect you only if you behave well.

At home, you shouldn’t be mean to your sisters or brothers or shout at anybody. If you are the elder brother or sister, you could help your younger siblings with their homework.

You should also be nice to your parents. For example, you should talk to them and listen to what they have to say. You could also help the out with some household chores.

You should get on well with your friends, too, and help them when they are in trouble.

Importantly, you should be well-behaved in school. You should listen to your teacher and try your best in your studies. You shouldn’t talk loudly in the school library or mess up the school furniture by drawing on it.

Why table manners are important if we want to leave a good impression

When you are in the school canteen, don’t make noises while you are eating. Close your mouth when chewing your food and swallow it before you speak .

You should always maintain cleanliness at home, school, and all other public places.

You should be polite to others at all times; never use swear words at home, school, or any other place.

I hope these suggestions can help you become a good boy or girl.

From the Editor

Thank you for your letter, Pui-chi. I totally agree with you. But, sadly, rude behaviour is not unusual in Hong Kong. We often hear people using foul language in public, and this is very disturbing.

Good manners are something to be proud of. It need only be something small, like holding open a door for the person behind you, or offering your seat to a pregnant woman on the MTR, but people do notice.

Good behaviour is also crucial for a student’s all-round development. A student with good manners will be popular among his or her schoolmates and teachers.

Many of us are too busy working or studying to think about our behaviour. Think how much nicer it would be to greet people with a friendly smile and a warm “hello”, instead of ignoring them as they walk past.

At school, students learn many subjects, but never manners.

Using the terms “Thank You” and “You are Welcome” shows that you have good manners.

Many people fail to realise how important good manners are. Good manners make life more pleasant for everyone.
