The kindest thing anyone has ever done for me - and anyone can ever do - is simply listen when I needed it. There is no better therapist or prescription than a friend willing to hear you talk and share your pain when you are feeling down.
The kindest thing someone has ever done for me is simply having me! Thank you, Mum! Without her, I literally wouldn't be who I am today. She's the kindest person I've been lucky enough to encounter.
On the night of my 18th birthday, I was staying with some distant relatives in Britain. They were total strangers who I had just met a few hours earlier. But when they learned it was my birthday, they went out to buy me a cake to celebrate. There were no shops nearby and it was already late, so I wasn't expecting much. So it was a really pleasant surprise when they produced a delicious birthday cake at midnight.
Nowadays, receiving a compliment or even a smile from someone seems to be a rare occurrence. One morning, late for school as usual, I was running out of my estate when the security guard smiled and said: "Good morning, have a great day!" At the bus stop the parents of other students then wished me a nice day too. I couldn't help but smile at all these positive greetings!
Once I went to a bookstore and simply sat inside reading for a couple hours. I found a really interesting book I wanted to buy, but I didn't have enough money on me. As I was putting the book back, an elderly gentleman walked over and handed me HK$200, smiling, and said, "Be kind to yourself and buy it," then left. So I bought it!
When you ask for someone's phone number and they give it to you.
After losing a hockey match, our whole team was feeling downhearted. Usually the senior team members should be the ones comforting the more junior players. But at break time, the younger players ran from class to class placing chocolate bars on our desks. It helped cheer up the whole team, and prepared us for our next challenge.
I was finding it hard to plan my future, but a new classmate told me he would support me whatever, even though we had just met. I felt blessed to have such an understanding classmate.
I'm a vegetarian, and it's not always easy to find veggie meals around town. You've got to pick your restaurants very carefully. This means people sometimes ditch me for meals and I'm left in a corner eating all by myself. But my true friends avoid meaty meals just to be able to enjoy lunch with me. I think it's very kind of them.
After I talked to Taylor Swift's parents before her concert, her dad gave me his card and told me to find him backstage after the show. At the time, I had no idea what was going on. In fact, Taylor has these secret meetings with a handful of loyal fans who are handpicked by her staff. Though I didn't get a pass for the fan meeting, Mr Swift still let me in. Yes, I got to meet Taylor in person! It was one of the most memorable experiences of my life.
