For girls, it’s period pain. Cramps can be unbearable but they are also a good excuse to skip school because people will feel awkward and stop asking you about it.
Eunice Yip, 15, Pooi To Middle School
A good one is saying you’re having stomach problems. If your parents don’t believe you, show them your “vomit” in the toilet (I hear cooked oatmeal looks pretty much like puke). Bend over and whimper in pain as your parents call the school!
Anne Kwok, 13, Diocesan Girls’ School
This morning I woke up with a giant, itchy, painful pimple on my nose. It looked so terrible that it affected my mental well-being. After thoughtful consideration, I decided not to go to school to save my schoolmates a horrible experience.
Asher Lam, 13, TWGHs Wong Fut Nam Secondary School
The best excuse to skip school is to take part in an overseas competition. You can make your friends jealous with your Snapchat videos, have fun, and come back with lots of medals.
Anushka Purohit, 16, Renaissance College
Allergic to school. I blame my allergies for everything, and sometimes you just need a break from the daily grind.
Angie Chan, 19, Hong Kong Baptist University
Think of all my intense commitment and unwavering dedication every time I chose not to skip school. Shouldn’t it be more worrying if I thought I didn’t deserve a break?
Matthew Ling, 14, Island School
Who says an excuse for skipping school can’t be related to a festival? Just tell the school that you’ve had too many mooncakes! I’m sure your teacher would understand.
Sebastian Wong, 17, PLK Vicwood K. T. Chong Sixth Form College
Yesterday, I tripped on a piece of chalk and fell face first onto the blackboard. Now I have a fear of chalk and blackboards, so I don’t think I can go to school ever again.
Stephanie Young, 15, Maryknoll Convent School (Secondary Section)
I was on my way to school, but I got sucked into a black hole and ended up in the Marvel world where I saw Iron Man, Hulk and a bunch of other heroes. By the time I found my way out, the black hole had transferred me directly to my home.
Anson Chu, 14, King Ling College
There are a lot of big snails outside my house now, and they are preventing me from coming to school. Teachers say we should not kill animals so I cannot step on them. And, I don’t have any helicopter or spaceship. So I cannot go to school today.
Hugo Chan, 12, King Ling College
