IT was a big day for the students of New Territories Heung Yee Kuk Tai Po District Secondary School when the school held its open day recently.

 According to principal Mr Poon Shui-yang, the school holds an open day every year.

  Last year, about 300 students from nearby visited the school. This year, the school sent many invitation letters to both primary and secondary schools in the Tai Po district.

  ''I am very pleased to find many of our students enthusiastic to take part in extra-curricular activities offered by the school, such as the open day,'' Mr Poon said.

  Colourful banners were put up on the school campus. Although the major exhibition was held in the school hall, visitors toured the classrooms and even the special rooms.

  More than 70 displays were set up by the school's 26 interest, sports and service clubs.

  At the Design and Technology Club's stall were handicrafts made by the students during class. Hooks, photo stands, clocks and different types of woodwork were displayed, attracting many visitors.

 Of all the stalls, the Social Science Club stall proved to be one the most popular as visitors were awarded small prizes like stuffed animals, dolls, delicate paper birds made by club members and candies if they won the game.

  The questions in the game were based on general knowledge in Geography and Social Science. Questions such as the population distribution in Hongkong were asked.

  The stall set up by the Integrated Science Club also drew the attention of most visitors. An interesting model helicopter which demonstrated the transformation of energy was the major attraction.

  By looking at the model, visitors were able to understand electrical and chemical energy stored in batteries turn into mechanical energy.

  There were also some interesting experiments designed to test one's eye-sight. Visitors were asked to take part in the blind spot test and the colour vision test.

  The stall stand set up by the Home Economics Club with the theme ''Children - Diet & Clothing'' also had a couple of interesting features.

  Apart from displaying students' classwork including children's dresses and stuffed toys, there was a series of products especially made for the open day.

  A small-scale children's room was put together by fourth-former Fung Yuen-ching. ''All the children's cushions, bags and commodities like lunch boxes and forks and spoons were specially made for this exhibit.''   Yuen-ching said the children's room took her about one month to complete.

     The task was assigned by her Home Economics teacher.

 ''I started on it about a month ago. I devoted my spare time to the project. I even spent the whole day working on it on Saturdays and Sundays,'' the fourth-former said.
