A touch of the whimsical in a journey through the Secret Garden
Alan Lo Yeung-kit has revamped three historical sites into hip restaurants - Classified, The Press Room and The Pawn. But the co-founder and director of the Press Room Group has been exploring ways to make them more than just your average restaurant.
He now aims to engage the art community and offer a platform for cultural exchange through collaboration with curator James Churchill. Entitled, Secret Garden, a three-week exhibition running from Thursday until July 4 will transform the first floor of The Pawn - a 19th century Chinese shophouse building in Wan Chai - into a gallery for 10 global artists' works.
Churchill said the theme was inspired by The Pawn's colonial origins and the British author Frances Hodgson Burnett's calssic children's book, The Secret Garden. 'I did some research on the book and came up with the concept of using multiple artists, mixing some of the drawings with food,' Churchill said.
The works of artists including Scott Musgrove, Vladimir Kush and Nathan Ota will be on display. Cedric Maridet, whose piece Le son de l'art featured at the Hong Kong International Art Fair last month, will be the backing track.
Head chef Anthony Fletcher has rustled up seasonal cocktails and dishes to be served, including honey-roasted chicken on sourdough with chilli, beetroot risotto balls with spring onion and horseradish mayonnaise, and rosewater Turkish delight.
Some of the artists will attend a VIP dinner on June 27. Limited to 25 guests, the six-course menu is priced at HK$600 per person or HK$880 with wine pairing. For reservations, call 2866.3444.
