Kowloon Shangri-La Until Apr 30

What is your idea of Shangri-La, that utopian place mentioned in James Hilton's 1933 novel Lost Horizon? More than 2,000 photographers from greater China responded to that question posed by Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, Top Travel and Photographer's Companion magazines, and sina.com last November for the 'My Shangri-La' photo contest.

More than 40 works, including the six winning entries, are currently on show at the Kowloon Shangri-La Hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui East until the end of this month before they travel onto Singapore. The competition asked amateur and professional photographers to capture the essence of the mythical place and their images should reflect on its 'qualities of grace, nature, serenity, mystique, enchantment and caring'. The winning entries are stunning landscapes in colour and black and white.

Taking the gold award is Yu Guofeng's Keeping Watch. According to the judging panel, which included Oscar-winning designer Tim Yip Kam-tim and Professor Wang Chuan of the China Central Academy of Fine Art's school of design, the interjection of the figure is an invisible transformation of the concept of 'self'. Zhang Shengli won the silver award with The Age of Innocence, which features four children in a dramatic landscape. Other winners include He Fa, Liao Xiaoxi, Luo Pinxi and Li Yayuan, who won the special conservation award with The Dawn of the Red Mountain (above).
