New Vision Arts Festival

If you are big on crossover concerts, check this out. This year's New Vision Arts Festival, to run from October 15 to November 21, is serving up more cultural fusion cocktails than you can shake a straw at.

The most far-out collaboration of the lot is The Butterfly Effect, featuring British drummer Budgie of Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Creatures, guitarist Sugizo of Luna Sea and X Japan, 'Conga King' Mabi from South Africa, Japanese taiko master Leonard Eto and session instrumentalist Knox Chandler. The concert will feature plenty of jamming and improvised solos.

Opening the month-long festival is mainland vocalist Zhu Zheqin, aka Dadawa (right), whose ethnic sound and unique performance style continues to influence her peers in the region. Ensemble Modern from Frankfurt will perform works by five contemporary composers from Germany, South Korea and Britain who drew their inspiration from the Pearl River Delta.

Edo de Waart of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra will be conducting Guo Wenjing's Dizi Concerto No 2.

The festival, launched by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department in 2002, is held once every two years to promote cutting-edge, Asia-relevant stage works.

Counter bookings start on August 13. Inquiries: 2370 1044. www.newvisionfestival.gov.hk
