When David and Victoria Beckham’s wedding date was announced back in the 1990s, there was an anecdote doing the rounds in Britain.

Everyone knew someone whose friend had a booking for the best suite at The Ritz hotel, in London, on the same date and who had been asked to give it up for a huge amount of money. When the offer was accepted, so the story went, a cheque duly arrived from a “Mr D Beckham”.

Apocryphal as that story was, thanks to the new Netflix documentary Beckham we now know that the couple spent their honeymoon at English composer Andrew Lloyd Webber’s villa in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, on the French Riviera.

The four-part series gives plenty of other pointers to where Posh and Becks have stayed over the years, as has Victoria Beckham through promoting her new perfume range. So if you are ready to spend it like Beckham, here are some of the places you might like to visit.

The couple’s first holiday together was to Portofino, on the Italian Riviera, in 1997, staying at the Splendido, perched among lush gardens on a cliffside overlooking the picturesque harbour and Ligurian Sea.

“The Hotel Splendido in Portofino was the first trip we went on outside a car park,” Victoria Beckham has said, explaining that the footballer and the pop star had gone to lengths to keep their relationship under wraps.

She went on to describe the hotel as “romantic and private” and has commemorated the landmark mini break with the release of her new perfume: Portofino ’97.

The hotel had become popular with the rich and famous in the 1950s. Now owned by the luxury Belmond group, it is currently undergoing a phased refurbishment, taking place during the annual winter closures.

The revamped swimming pool area, the Splendido Grill terrace restaurant and The Baronessa Suite were unveiled this summer.

Currently closed for winter, the hotel will reopen for summer 2024 with more areas updated.

Just 10 months into the relationship, David Beckham proposed to Victoria when they were staying at the luxury country house hotel Rookery Hall, about an hour from Manchester where he had been playing football that afternoon.

The couple held a press conference the following morning in front of the entrance of this handsome stone Georgian manor.

Since then, the hotel has added a health club and spa as well as a number of new guest rooms. The rooms mix period features with contemporary, neutral furnishings and many overlook the property’s 38 acres (15 hectares) of gardens and woodlands.

Rookery Hall is also known for serving a modern British menu in a mahogany wood panelled restaurant. The loved-up Beckhams, though, opted for room service in their suite.

Luttrellstown Castle, set in nearly 600 acres of parkland on the outskirts of Dublin, was the venue for Posh and Becks’ wedding, in 1999.

The fairy-tale castle has 20 rooms and suites, which are individually decorated in serene shades and comfortable, luxurious fabrics. Some have four-poster beds, chandeliers, fireplaces and roll-top baths.

The resort includes an 18-hole championship golf course, which David Beckham was seen playing on to calm his pre-wedding nerves with best man and Manchester United teammate Gary Neville.

4. Paris, France

Victoria Beckham has said that she and David visited Paris often in the 1990s and stayed at Hotel Costes or the nearby Ritz Paris, in Place Vendome, and that they return to the French capital for celebrations, weekends or even if they have “a free 24 hours”.

It is the Ritz that Victoria has named her new perfume Suite 302 after, in homage to their favourite room.

The hotel completed a major renovation in 2016, retaining its 18th-century neoclassical style but with added modern features, including air conditioning and Wi-fi.

Since then, the hotel has updated its Ritz Spa and has just opened a new restaurant, Espadon, with its first female chef, Eugénie Béziat, at the helm and a menu mixing African and French flavours.

After news broke of David Beckham’s alleged affair while playing for Real Madrid, the couple put on a show of togetherness for the cameras in Courchevel 1850 while on what they described as a pre-planned skiing trip.

The village added numerals to its name for marketing reasons, to present the ski resort as being high-altitude, although it actually sits at 1,747 metres (5,700 feet) above sea level, not 1,850.

The couple and their growing family have stayed in the exclusive ski resort – the glitziest in the Trois Vallées – many times since. Most recently they have been spotted at Aman Le Mélézin, directly on the Bellecôte piste, where the suites come with fireplaces and mountain views.

A spa, swimming pool and fitness area takes up two entire floors of the hotel, which reopens on December 8 for the winter season.

The Aman has an acclaimed Japanese restaurant, Nama, which the Beckhams have been seen enjoying. They also like to have lunch at La Soucoupe restaurant, on the slopes, which specialises in meats grilled on an open fire.
