He was last seen throwing a similar tantrum on Friday, when he crushed 20 cars after fleeing nearby nature reserve Yexianggu (Wild Elephant Valley), Xinhua reported.

Video footage shown on CCTV News shows him bumping into more vehicles on the G213 national highway that links Yunnan with northwest China’s Gansu Province, bringing his tally to 28 cars.

Rangers at the nearby national park told Xinhua that Zhusunya, whose name translates as ‘Bamboo Shoot Teeth’, was upset after another male elephant stole his love away from him.

Police closed part of the highway and evacuated tourists from the area while they tried to re-capture the elephant.

The car owners will be compensated for any damage, according to local media reports.

Wild Asian elephants are a protected species in China. There are fewer than 300 of them in the country.
