Chinese university hosts mass wedding for 400 couples

Alumni travel from at least 10 provinces and three continents for large scale nuptials

As many as 400 couples have returned to east China to be married in a mass ceremony sponsored by their alma mater, mainland media reports.

Zhejiang University in Hangzhou invited its alumni to return to the school to be married on Saturday as a way to celebrate the school’s 119th anniversary, Xinhua reported.

The more than 400 couples travelled from at least 10 provinces across China and as far away as the United States, Germany, Singapore, Japan and South Korea , all returned to the Zhejiang University for the wedding.

The ceremony was also witnessed by more than 5,000 family members, teachers and classmates of the couples.

A class of 2007 graduate from the university’s school of food science and engineering said it took him and his fiance 17 hours to travel by air from Xinjiang to attend the wedding, the Youth Times reported.

The groom chose to return to Zhejiang University for his wedding because the couple survived a long-distance relationship while his girlfriend studied in Harbin, in the far northeast province of Heilongjiang.

Another couple, Yu Yongzhe and He Leijie, both attended the university.

“We watched the first mass wedding. It was an exam week and we were studying in the library. At that time, we have never imagined that we would have such a wedding here four years later,” said Yu.
