Woman rescued after 24 hours in ruins of collapsed building in China

Nine killed in fall of five-storey illegal residential compound in Zhejiang province

Rescuers helped a survivor to safety after she spent nearly 24 hours buried by the rubble of a group of buildings that collapsed, killing nine people from two families in Wenzhou in Zhejiang province on Friday.

A second person was also found alive, Xinhua reported.

Part of the five-storey residential building in Dahui village collapsed at about 8am on Thursday.

“The scene is quite chaotic, as if the place was levelled by an earthquake,” a rescuer told Xinhua. “We have to work very carefully because the wreckage of the ruined buildings are joined to homes still standing.”

The report also said that local authorities confirmed the fallen buildings were built with brick and concrete, and were erected illegally by local farmers. An investigation into the collapse has been launched.

The rescue operation involved eight cranes and excavators, more than 400 paramilitary officers, firefighters, township officials and medical workers.
