Four dead, one injured after brick kiln collapses in southwest China

Victims were cleaning the fire chamber when side wall caved in

Four people were killed and another seriously injured when a kiln collapsed at a brick works in southwest China on Saturday, Chongqing Broadcasting Network Television reports.

A kiln collapsed at 4:30pm, burying the victims beneath a heap of debris, witnesses said.

The workers were cleaning the fire chamber when a side wall collapsed at about 4.30pm, burying under a pile of debris.

Firefighters found the seriously injured surviver, a 59-year old man, near the mouth of the kiln. With the help of an excavator, rescuers found the bodies of the other victims, the oldest being a woman aged 69.

Local work safety officials were investigating the cause of the accident.

Nobody had been detained or arrested after the tragedy.

Brick kilns remain one China’s worst workplaces, where cases of child labour and the virtual slavery of mentally disabled people have been reported by mainland media.
