Chinese man’s bid to woo ex-girlfriend with watermelons proves damp squib

A student’s attempt to woo back his ex-girlfriend in northern China by publicly offering her 99 watermelons and a cake was thwarted after security guards on campus ordered the crowds to disperse, according to a newspaper report.
The watermelons were then given to the watching crowd and the ex-girlfriend failed to show up, the Dahe Daily reported.
The stunt was arranged by a student at the Henan University of Engineering in Zhengzhou, according to the article.
He got a friend to transport the watermelons to the campus in a small van on Monday night and place them on a sports pitch.
There was also a cake with candles lit near the pile of fruit, according to pictures taken by students watching the event.
The friend told dozens watching the student had broken up with his girlfriend and wanted to get back together.
The student, who was not named, called his ex-girlfriend, but she did not show up after 10 minutes.
Security guards then told the crowd to disperse.
The student’s friend told people to take away the fruit, according to the article.
The report did not explain why the student thought the offer of large numbers of watermelons would win back his former girlfriend.
