What a scorcher! Traffic light bursts into flames in eastern China

Fire caused by damage from combination of heatwave and heavy rains, according to Beijing news outlet

A heatwave that followed torrential downpours is to blame for a traffic light bursting into flames in the eastern Chinese city of Xuzhou.

That’s according to Beijing-based news outlet Pear Video, which posted footage of the incident in coastal Jiangsu province on its website on Tuesday.

The video shows the set of lights on fire at an intersection in Feng county, while the countdown timer and arrow signals next to it continue to function normally.

Traffic continues to move through the intersection apparently unaware of the fire overhead, as pieces of burning metal fall on the road. No one was injured in the incident.

A caption accompanying the video said the fire had been caused by damage from the combination of recent heavy rainfall and high temperatures.

Xuzhou has been in the grip of a heatwave over the past week, with an average maximum temperature of 35 degrees Celsius, after a period of heavy rains.

Separately, in neighbouring Zhejiang province, some residents of Hangzhou have reported cracked windows since the summer heat took hold, news portal 163.com reported on Tuesday.
