HSBC websites targeted by hackers
An international denial-of-service attack targeted HSBC on Friday, leaving customers in several countries unable to use the bank’s online services, the company said.
By noon on Friday, Hong Kong time, websites in some countries were still inaccessible, scmp.com has learned. They included Britain, Pakistan, Ireland and Russia.
The bank’s Hong Kong website was working on Friday. A local spokesman said no customers in the city had reported problems with internet access.
“We are taking appropriate action, working hard to restore service,” HSBC said in a statement. “We are pleased to say that some sites are now back up and running.”
The denial-of-service attack did not affect any customer data, but prevented customers from doing internet banking, HSBC said.
A denial-of-service attack disrupts websites and corporate networks by overwhelming them with incoming web traffic.
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority said HSBC had notified it about the attack.
