The ferries involved in the National Day crash off Lamma, which claimed 39 lives, were inspected yesterday by Mr Justice Michael Lunn and former audit director Benjamin Tang Kwok-bun, the two members of the commission of inquiry set up to investigate the crash. The Lamma IV was at the Government Dockyard at Stonecutters Island and the Sea Smooth at the new Yau Ma Tei typhoon shelter.
The manager of a Yau Ma Tei education centre and 26 people who took a hospitality course at the centre have been arrested for trying to obtain HK$250,000 in study allowances illegally. The alleged scam came to light in July when staff at the Continuing Education Fund found applications for reimbursement of tuition fees suspicious. Three people were being held for questioning last night and the rest had been released on bail.
Police appealed for information on a fatal accident in which an 83-year-old woman was hit by a delivery van in Yuk Wah Street, Tsz Wan Shan, at about 9am. Witnesses should call 2305 7500.
Two 10-year-old boys missing since Wednesday were found hiding in an out-of-service train at Sunny Bay station on Lantau Island. Police said they were arrested for breaking into a classmate's Sheung Shui home in North District on Wednesday and stealing HK$4,000, an iPad and a camera. They were released on bail.
An interdepartmental working group would be formed to come up with ways to rid the city's shoreline of marine litter, environment minister Wong Kam-sing announced.
