More than 50 people were evacuated from a youth hostel and a construction site after an unexploded bomb from the second world war was found on Mount Davis Path yesterday. The bomb, about 60cm long and 15cm across, was found by a foreigner as he was hiking near the Mount Davis youth hostel. Police would decide after inspection if it needed to be detonated at the scene.
Three defendants have failed a third bid to thwart fraud prosecutions against them on the grounds that files relating to their trial were deleted by a senior government prosecutor. The High Court rejected the application filed by Kelly Cheng Kit-yin, her daughter Carmen Cheng Wei-ming and Ip Kin-man - former vice-chairwoman and directors of Hong Kong-listed Yueshou Environmental Holdings - to quash the District Court's refusal of their application for a permanent stay of criminal proceedings.
The Immigration Department is seeking a HK$912 million grant from the legislature to complete a facelift of its checkpoint facilities by 2019. The application came as figures showed the number of mainland visitors last year rose nearly 25 per cent over 2011's total.
Two food samples - a dry sweet potato and a preserved pomelo - were found to contain preservatives exceeding the permitted level, the Centre for Food Safety said. It issued a letter to the vendors, asking for the food to be disposed.
