Three 15-year-olds were sent to rehabilitation and detention centres yesterday for robbing a 68-year-old taxi driver of HK$304.

Magistrate Lambert Lee Ka-chai said the trio's crime was serious, and that their violent behaviour had shown no respect for the elderly cab driver.

The teenagers pleaded guilty to one count of robbery in Tsuen Wan Court. Their parents were at the courtroom to hear the magistrate hand down his sentence.

The court earlier heard that at midnight on January 22, one of the three young robbers had suggested the crime to his peers, as a way to make some money.

One of the teenagers then went to a convenience store to buy a glass bottle of Vitasoy, while the other two searched for a pair of black plastic gloves to avoid leaving any fingerprints at the crime scene. The trio then hailed Lie Jauw-lung's taxi outside the Tsuen Wan Nan Fung Centre and asked to be driven to Shing Mun Reservoir.

Upon arrival, the second defendant grabbed Lie's neck from behind, while the first defendant attacked Lie on his head with the glass bottle.

Lie shouted: "Don't hit me. I [will] give you all my money."

The third defendant snatched the driver's money from his cashbox, and told him to surrender all the money he had in hand.

The violent attack left Lie with tenderness, bruising and swelling on the left side of his forehead.

He called the police after the trio ran away, making off with about HK$100 each.

The magistrate said the first defendant, who initiated the crime, had been given a caution by the police for a previous offence.

Lee said he had failed to learn his lesson and reoffended.
