Man survives 60 metre suicide leap from Tsing Ma Bridge
The 30-year-old man, surnamed Ng, is the first person to have survived a jump from the bridge since it opened in 1997
The 30-year-old man, surnamed Ng, was still conscious when rescue workers from the fire department and marine police pulled him out of the water to safety.
At dawn on Wednesday, the man flagged down a taxi in Sham Shui Po and asked to be taken to Tung Chung. According to the taxi driver, the man asked him to stop the car halfway across the bridge, which links the New Territories to Lantau Island. He claimed he was not feeling well.
The man got off and climbed over the 1.5-metre-high bridge barrier and sat precariously on the edge. The taxi driver called the police.
Marine police and firefighters arrived within an hour, but the man jumped and hit the water from more than 20 stories high. He was sent immediately to Yan Chai Hospital in Tsuen Wan. Police have contacted his family.
According to reports, he is the first person to have survived a jump from Hong Kong's largest bridge since it opened in 1997.
In the last 16 years, there have been 10 reported cases of suicide jumps from the Tsing Ma and neighbouring Kap Shui Mun bridges.
