Police are searching for a suspected sex attacker who grabbed a 16-year-old girl and dragged her to a hillside in Chai Wan on Wednesday night.

The attack was stopped only when a passer-by noticed the pair and shouted for help, police said. The attacker, wearing a face mask and white gloves, fled.

Last night about 60 officers were deployed at the site, assisted by a helicopter from the Government Flying Service.

Police are treating the case as one of attempted rape and are investigating whether it is linked to an attempted rape case in April in which a woman in her 50s was dragged to a Quarry Bay hillside before being ordered to undress.

Wednesday's incident happened shortly after 10pm when the Form Five schoolgirl was jogging alone at a basketball court opposite Fung Wah Estate.

"The man grabbed her neck from behind and covered her mouth with his hand," an officer said. "She was … dragged three to four metres to a hillside."

A woman walking a dog saw them and shouted for help. The man left the girl and fled on foot.

The attacker is about 1.75 metres tall and aged between 20 and 30. Anyone with information should call 2880 4267.
