Hongkongers bundle up as chilly weather hits city, but higher temperatures expected over the weekend

Temperatures dropped to between 17 and 19 degrees Celsius, with some areas falling to as low as 10 degrees

Hongkongers braced themselves for colder weather as temperatures in some areas plunged to as low as 10 degrees Celsius on Thursday morning.

But the cool and crisp weather will not last long, with higher temperatures forecast to return over the weekend.

Temperatures of between 17 and 19 degrees were recorded across Hong Kong on Thursday, and some areas in Lantau Island and the New Territories even saw temperatures hitting 10 degrees as of 8.10am.

“The northeast monsoon is bringing cool weather to Guangdong. Locally, temperatures over the territory this morning were generally 3 to 4 degrees lower than those yesterday,” the Hong Kong Observatory said.

The forecaster said the weather will remain overcast with a few rain patches for the rest of Thursday, and will continue to be cool on Friday.

But Hongkongers should still keep their summer clothes handy as weather in the city is predicted to heat up gradually over the weekend and early next week, with temperatures rising to a maximum of 28 degrees.
