Hong Kong police hunt for attackers who staged car ambush that left 1 man injured

  • Police say silver Toyota seven-seater and black vehicle intercepted and cut off escape of Mercedes-Benz before passenger attacked with knives
  • ‘Six black-clad men carrying knives jumped out from the two vehicles and attacked the 40-year-old passenger,’ source says

Hong Kong police are searching for at least six attackers who used two vehicles to box in a Mercedes-Benz before they attacked its passenger with knives in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The force said a silver Toyota seven-seater and a black vehicle intercepted the grey car on Yau Ma Tei’s Man Ying Street at about 3.15am.

A source familiar with the case said: “Six black-clad men carrying knives jumped out from the two vehicles and attacked the 40-year-old passenger [in the Mercedes-Benz].”

The masked attackers fled in the black vehicle after the attack, leaving the seven-seater behind to block the Mercedes, the insider said.

Officers have launched a search for the gang, but no arrests have been made yet.

The victim suffered injuries to his hands and was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment.

The 26-year-old driver of the Mercedes was unhurt.

The insider said the victim worked at a construction site and the driver was a salesman.

Officers arrested the driver for alleged possession of an illegal drug after they discovered what was believed to be crystal meth in the car.

Police said they were still determining the exact amount and street value of the find.

The force said the vehicle abandoned at the scene had fake number plates.

“Officers also seized a machete and a retractable baton, along with some number plates [in the abandoned vehicle],” the source added.

The insider said efforts to trace the attackers and those behind the knife attack continued.

Detectives from the Yau Tsim criminal investigation unit are handling the case.

Police handled 558 reports of wounding last year, compared with the 565 cases recorded in 2022.
