Hong Kong tourist dies after being swept out to sea in Bali

According to the Xinhua news agency, one was killed and another injured in the incident during unusually strong waves

A Hong Kong tourist was killed after being dragged out to sea by unusually strong waves at a famous surf spot on the Indonesian resort island of Bali, Xinhua news agency has reported.

The 70-year-old man, surnamed Wong, died after he was swept away at Padang Galak beach on June 9. His body was cremated and has since been brought back to Hong Kong.

Another man, from Singapore, was injured and received treatment at a local hospital.

It is understood Wong was visiting relatives in Bali with his family before the accident.

The Immigration Department said it had been assisting the victim’s family, and has been closely in touch with officials from the Chinese consulate in Denpasar to understand the situation and follow up on the incident.

Weather forecasters said the rough conditions were caused by strong groundswell in the southern Indian Ocean, with the subsequent waves making it to the shores of Bali.

It is expected the extreme weather would continue until the end of this month.

Two people died in a similar accident earlier this month.

A senior official with the local disaster management agency told Xinhua that the coastguard has boosted surveillance in beaches at several spots, while tourists were banned from beach activities following the deadly waves.

Hundreds of houses and buildings were damaged on Java Island, while flooding in coastal regions has displaced hundreds of residents, according to local media reports.
