Kanye West's ‘The Life of Pablo’ is the first album to go platinum from streaming

Kanye West just earned his eighth platinum album with The Life of Pablo, and passed another major milestone in the process.
This week, The Life of Pablo became the first album to be certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) from streaming alone. Since its release last February, listeners have streamed the album over 3 billion times worldwide, with 1.5 billion streams coming from the US

The album originally made history as the first streaming-only album to reach No. 1 on the Billboard charts.

Though Chance the Rapper’s Coloring Book debuted in the Billboard top 10 in its first week of sales and became the first streaming-only album to win a Grammy (while The Life of Pablo came away from the 2017 awards empty-handed), it has yet to go platinum.

West has stayed away from the spotlight in recent months following his hospitalisation for exhaustion in November 2016, re-emerging to meet with US President Donald Trump at Trump Tower that next month.
