Hong Kong Sevens almost sold out, officials say, as tournament prepares to bid farewell to city home

  • Organisers say more than 85 per cent of general admission tickets have been snapped up
  • Sevens is expected to switch to Kai Tak Sports Park in 2025, ending 30 years at Hong Kong Stadium

This year’s Hong Kong Sevens is on track to be a sellout, organisers said on Friday.

With little more than a month to go before the event kicks off on April 5, officials said they had sold 34,000 three-day passes, more than 85 per cent of the general admission tickets up for grabs.

If they reach their target, it will be the first time the tournament has been fully attended since the end of the pandemic, in what will be the last time it is held at Hong Kong Stadium.

The Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens is expected to move to Kai Tak Sports Park in 2025, having spent 30 years at its current home.

Officials said the occasion had “captured renewed interest amongst international visitors with ticket sales from overseas returning to 42 per cent of totals in 2024”.

That figure is up from the 23 per cent last year, and the understandably low 3 per cent during the pandemic in 2022.

“With a month to go and only a few thousand tickets left, we believe that the tournament is on track to return to its pre-pandemic sell out status and are confident to bid the stadium a good farewell with another weekend of Hong Kong Sevens magic,” Robbie McRobbie, the Hong Kong Rugby CEO, said.

“A return to full house also highlights Hong Kong’s return as one of Asia’s top tourism and events destinations, a position that the Sevens has contributed to throughout the decades.”
