Paris Fashion Week finished on Wednesday with a powerful finale to the autumn-winter 2013 collections. If the beginning of the nine-day event seemed dark and severe, the ending served to bring out the most playful and positive of next season's designs.

French label Rue du Mail swims against the mainstream

Martine Sitbon with founder Jimmy Chan

The world doesn't need one more coat, one more shirt or dress for the sake of it, so we want to say something with our clothes," says fashion designer Martine Sitbon of independent Parisian label Rue du Mail.

At the start of Paris Fashion Week, Belgian designer Dries Van Noten sent an unexpected line-up down the runway for his autumn-winter 2013/14 show. And it may be one of the most interesting shows of the week.

Fashion Week is almost over. As some of the hip crowd heads to Carine Roitfeld's party tonight at the Hotel Salomon de Rothschild, there are others that lie utterly exhausted and spent. But despite this being the penultimate day of the Paris schedule, it's not to say it wasn't full of wonder and excitement.

Paris Fashion Week: the modern age

Givenchy was set to start at 8pm. Despite our efforts, Riccardo Tisci was apparently not taking any interviews post show this season. The offering for Spring was, however, worth the wait, especially for those, like me, who had been attending shows since the morning. Edgy as always, it was a collection that showed Tisci's special talent for setting off new trends that other labels follow in coming seasons.

Paris Fashion Week: variety is the spice

It was a busy day for fashion in the French capital. Starting at 9.30am with a show by Japanese designer Junya Watanabe and ending with Spanish luxury label Loewe's show at the Universite Paris Decartes almost 12 hours later, the runways stretched the full scale of high fashion. It felt like an exciting day to be part of the industry. All of the 6 shows I attended expressed something totally different and extreme about how they developed as brands.
