Serena Williams’ verdict that she is “a bit disappointed” with her 2013 season indicates her urgency to overtake the 18 grand slam titles of Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert and to get on with chasing Steffi Graf’s Open era record of 22.

It has been 14 years since Serena Williams won her first US Open, but there was no hint of decline as the 31-year-old American outlasted Victoria Azarenka for her fifth title at Flushing Meadows.

Defending champion Serena Williams won her much-anticipated US Open showdown with Sloane Stephens, while Li Na avenged a painful loss in Rome to join the world number one in the last eight.

Williams defeated 15th seed American Sloane Stephens 6-4, 6-1 to reach the quarter-finals, winning eight of the last nine game in avenging a loss that ousted her from the 2013 Australian Open.
