Mavis Hee - Regrettable (What's Music)The media has been going ga-ga over Mavis Hee's physical resemblance to alternative diva Faye Wong. But they are most alike in their voices, although this may be sacrilege to Wong's fans.
Hee is the latest 'typhoon' to come out of Singapore, according to her CD cover blurb, and listening to her one can understand why.
At only 22, Hee is showing a lot of promise and Regrettable is only her second album. Her voice and control are excellent. Her closest rival, fellow Singaporean Kit Chan, has had a head start hit-wise in Hong Kong but Chan's vocal control is still a little wobbly. The diversity on Regrettable gives Hee ample opportunity to show off her better points.
Singaporean composer Chen Jiaming, who wrote most of the songs, has come up with amazingly lush melodies.
The title track (track 2), finds Hee sounding amazingly like Wong although that might work more to her disadvantage. But there is no doubting that she does good work on the catchy ballad.
Shadow Lover (track 8) is another inspiring number which plays off Hee's rich vocals and the luxurious arrangement of strings and strong drum rhythm.
