Andrew Thomson, project and business manager of the Centre of Environmental Technology (CET), said all companies in the category had demonstrated top management commitment and had done a lot to raise staff awareness of environmental issues through internal training.

'Participating companies have put into place environmental control and prevention measures in compliance with government regulations and, in most cases, exceeded the stated requirements,' Mr Thomson said.

He said there had been marked improvement in the standard of this year's entrants.

Last year, no entrant was judged to be worthy of the main award.
