SINGER Sally Yeh does not believe in making excuses when things do not go well. She does not even accept excuses that are made on her behalf. If it means facing up to unpleasant truths and adjusting, so be it.

Yeh has just emerged from a fair-to-good concert run with her husband, George Lam, at the Hong Kong Coliseum. Fair, because the ticket sales were not as good as they had hoped; good, because reviews were very positive about the show. The show's promoters tried to pin the reasons for the poor attendance on the bad market conditions.

'That's just an excuse . . . you can't blame anybody but yourself,' said the one-time self-titled 'happy girl' turned happily married woman.

'Maybe our strategy was wrong. You know, in Hong Kong they like having to snatch up tickets. If we had announced five shows first and then added on another five when the first five sold out, it might have turned out better.' A suggestion that the less-than-ideal showing was because Hong Kong residents usually go away for the Easter holidays was dismissed just as quickly.

'That's just another excuse. Maybe Lam and I have been around too long. Our old fans may have emigrated or they may not like going to concerts any more. But the best thing to say is: maybe we're not as popular as we were.

'In the end, it was still successful because the show was so good. I fell asleep every night with a smile on my face. I'm so proud of the show.' Yeh is even prouder of the fact that she managed to persuade her husband to dance, something he had never done in more than 20 years of singing.
