Security guards are protecting Aeon Credit Company automatic teller machines (ATMs) in line with police warnings about their vulnerability.

Cash boxes containing more than $400,000 were ripped out of Aeon ATMs in Tsz Wan Shan, Shamshuipo and Ngau Tau Kok in one 36-hour period on Wednesday and Thursday.

Crime Prevention Bureau Senior Inspector Henry Chiang Kwok-wah said consistent alarm failures during the raids could either indicate the bandits knew how to deactivate the system, or pointed to a problem with the ATMs.

'Aeon has had a quick response. They have hired security guards to guard the ATMs overnight - they are doing what we've advised them,' Mr Chiang said.

'I believe the size of Aeon [ATMs] is smaller than other banks, so the culprits think they will be an easy target.' Aeon was believed to be the only financial company in Hong Kong using the smaller ATMs.

'They're going to do more security and insulation. The company has to install more security features to make them harder to attack. In the time being, the guards will be there,' Mr Chiang said.
