ROCKER shocker . . . Beyond, one of the foremost purveyors of Canto-rock, have announced that they are taking a three-year break to pursue their individual careers.

 Although Paul Wong Koon-chung, Wong Ka-keung and Yip Sai-wing (pictured) have valiantly tried to carry the Beyond name, things have not been the same for the band since the 1993 death of its leader Koma Wong Ka-kui - largely recognised as the soul of the group.

 Paul Wong has reiterated that the break is only temporary and the 17-year-old band is in no way splitting up. But as far as Ad-lib can remember, very few bands that go on temporary hiatus ever get back together.

 Hopefully Beyond - which did give the soppy Canto-pop world a jolt - will be the exception.

Painful break AT least the Beyond split is a lot more amiable than the erstwhile romance between former disc jockey Hung Chiu-fung and socialite Po Wing-kam.

 Things are really getting ugly in that corner with Hung going crazy every time Po's name is mentioned.

 First he's chasing after a $1 million 'debt' which he claims Po owes him, then he's calling her obscene names in front of the media.

 In the latest reports, he has been spilling the beans on their, er, nocturnal activities.

 These have included some rather embarrassing graphic and detailed descriptions which, quite frankly, turn the stomach.

 Information like this should be classified in the 'need to know' category and, honestly, no one other than the two of them needs to know.

 Those who believe hell hath no fury like a woman scorned have obviously not met Hung.

Ghost stories FOLLOWING the runaway success of last year's 100-show Sentimental Journey - featuring the 'return' of 1960s screen goddess Chan Po-chu after more than two decades - it is no wonder that Springtime Productions has been encouraged to go one-up.

 Springtime has just announced plans to do a 200-show run of The Dark Tales over four months either late next year or in early 2001.

 The production - a collection of Chinese ghost tales - will be a re-staging of the original, written by Raymond To Kwok-wai about seven years ago for which he won best playwright of 1992-93.

 Although Springtime is loath to announce any further details, some leaks have revealed that the Hong Kong Tourist Association may be 'sponsoring' the $80 million production.

 Apparently, big-screen actress Rachel Lee Lai-chun (Ordinary Heroes) has been approached for one of the lead roles.

 Another actress approached is Alice Lau Nga-lai (I Have A Date With Spring).

Early bird A BIT of a scare on the 'dragon child' front when Elaine Ng Yee-lei was admitted to hospital in the wee hours of Wednesday morning.

 According to reports from 'eyewitnesses', the expectant Ng was in a rather distraught state, which led to speculation that she might be in danger of having a miscarriage.

 Her mother later told reporters that Ng was feeling fine and was just suffering from some bloatedness.

 However, as Ad-lib was going to press, there was news that Ng had in fact given birth to a baby girl - more than a month earlier than the expected date of January 1, 2000. No further details have been given out but we trust mother and child are doing fine.
