CONGRATULATIONS are in order for singer Jacky Cheung Hok-yau. Not only is he the proud father of a bouncing baby girl, he has also proved that you can pull the wool over the paparazzi's eyes too.
Cheung's wife, May Law Mei-wei, gave birth to the couple's first child at the Hong Kong Sanatorium on August 3 but the happy event was Hong Kong's biggest secret for a week. Cheung had been taking steps to keep his wife away from prying eyes since news leaked of her pregnancy several months ago. As the birth drew near, he had been so low-key that even close friends such as veteran actor Wu Fung didn't hear about it until the news was released by Cheung's record label executives last Wednesday.
Singers out of time
SINGERS Eason Chan Yick-shun and Gigi Leung Wing-kei received tiny slaps on the wrist from actress Do Do Cheng last week when their tardiness caused a press conference for a TVB charity extravaganza to start more than 35 minutes late. While emcee-ing Cheng could not resist a few digs at 'people who were late'.
Both Chan and Leung had their excuses. Chan said his record company people told him it started at the later time while Leung said she needed the extra time to 'set' her hair to look nice for the photographers. Must have taken her hours to set that page-boy hairstyle.
Celebrity make-over
SPEAKING of Do Do Cheng . . . and Lisa Wang: the two actresses seem to have been the victims of a sly trick by a cosmetics firm. Cheng and Wang were part of a group of celebrities - including Athena Chu Yan and Fannie Yuen Kit-ying - who had been invited as guests of honour for the launch of a cosmetics line.
