Lee Wing-Sze

Wendy Lam Wan-ting, a Form Seven student at  St Margaret's Girls'  College, said she was offended  by the idea of wearing school uniforms to a rave party.

'Some of the uniforms they were wearing  resembled those of prestigious schools.  It was outright disrespect,' she said.

'The celebrities were smoking cigarettes and probably marijuana and taking Ecstasy in their school uniforms.  It is absolutely offensive.'

Vremeli Chung Choi-lan, Wan-ting's  schoolmate, shared the same view. She said it would have an adverse effect on teenagers.

'Nobody should wear uniforms but students, and school uniforms should be worn nowhere but at school,' she said.

'The stars should not have gone to a rave party, which is notorious for alcohol and drugs, in school uniforms.

'They were singers and actors - idols of teenagers. What they did would certainly have an effect on youths.  They should  have been more socially responsible.'

Alvin Got Mo-ken, a fifth former at  King George V School,  was less critical. He said  the public should not take the incident too seriously.

'I have no problems with the way these people were dressed.  What they did was so silly it  isn't even worth talking about. I guess  they wanted  to do something bizarre and outrageous for publicity.

'I don't think it would affect teenagers much. They have  probably got used to this kind of gimmicks.'

Form One student  Chu Pik- yee, of  Tack Ching Girls' Middle  School, said  the behaviour of  celebrities had an effect on teenagers.

'Many youngsters adore these singers and actors. If they  drink and smoke, they will follow,'  she said.

Pik-yee's classmate, Leong  Wing-yee, said:  'Stars should set a good example for their fans.'

She said what happened at  the rave party would affect the reputation of prestigious schools.

'People would get a bad impression about students from those schools.'

Lim Kin-yan, a fifth former at  Hong Kong Teachers' Associa tion Lee Heng Kwei Secondary School, said: 'It's no big deal! It's just something personal.'

She said the incident might have undermined certain schools' reputation, but it would not       have changed the way teenagers think or behave.

Fong Chi-hei and Li Kin-man, Form Five students at  St Bonaventure College, said it was  in      appropriate to wear school uniforms to a rave party.

'Uniforms are a school symbol. What they did would damage the schools' reputation or image,'  Chi-hei said.

Kin-man said it was all right for celebrities to wear school  uniforms at school-related events.  The two students said the stars set a bad example for teenagers with their crazy behaviour at the party.

'Teen idols have a strong influence on their fans. Many youths would imitate their idols.'  However, they both said  what happened would not make them feelless fond of their favourite artistes.

'What we admire is their talents and performance,  not their appearances or behaviour,' Kin- man said.
