A lack of facilities and venues hinders Hong Kong's sports development, a Hong Kong School Sports Federation official said at Hong Kong True Light College's 24th sports day.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, guest-of-honour Silas Chiang Tak-cheung, who is secretary-general of the federation, said the failure of Hong Kong's bid to host the 2006 Asian Games highlighted the weakness of sports development in the SAR.
'Only one sports training centre, the Sports Institute, has been established in 20 years,' Mr Chiang said.
'Without more comprehensive training centres, sports development in Hong Kong will be very limited.'
Although Hong Kong lost the Asian Games bid, Mr Chiang believes the Government should still realise what would guarantee better sports development and build more sports facilities. To boost sports standards, the mobilisation of sports associations, schools and educators was important, he said.
'Many students give up training when they reach Form Five because they have to focus on the public exams. This limits sports in Hong Kong.'
Mr Chiang said sports was 'a good medium' for young people to experience both success and failure.
