Diocesan Boys' School (DBS) and Heep Yunn School won the boys' and girls' overall titles in the  Inter- school Athletics Championships for Hong Kong Island and Kowloon Division One held at the Wan Chai Sports Ground.

DBS coach Cheng Pun said the  team's performance  was satisfying. 'They practised very hard  this year and spent a lot of time training,' Cheng said.

Besides regular practice, the team also took part in  extra training sessions before the competition.

Team captain  Cheng Chun- yeung, a Grade A 110 m hurdles gold medallist, said the team was very dedicated.

'As we lost last year, we worked harder this year,' Chun- yeung said.

With the outstanding  performance of Grade A and B athletes, the school won the overall championship in both grades.

'Although they did not win the Grade C overall title, the athletes had done their best,'  he said.

Many athletes broke their own records during the first and  second day of competition.   One of the  Grade A athletes, Ip Yui- sun, won  gold medals in the long jump and the triple jump.

'The training was really tough, but it was worth it as we won the overall champions' title back,' he said.

La Salle College were the first runners-up and Chong Gene  Hang College the second runners-up.

Heep Yunn School defeated  Good Hope School and Diocesan Girls' School to defend the  overall girls' title.

Heep Yunn coach Lam Wai- keung said: 'We didn't know  whether we would  win until the last event.'

Athletics team captain Sincere Kan Chung-sze said: 'We've practised long and hard for the competition.'

Lam attributed the team's victory to their change of attitude.

'They used to think that they only need to practise before the competition,  but they've changed. They have been practising the whole year through,' he said.

Grade C athletes  Chan Ling and Lai Tsui-shan were very excited about winning the championship.

'We practised almost every day. We're so happy that we have won,'  said Tsui-shan, who won the long jump, 100 m and 400 m relay.

Ling, the high jump, 200 m and 400 m relay winner, said she was satisfied with her  performance.

The athletes were grateful for their fellow students' support.

'Even those who did not take part in the competition came to cheer us on,' Chung-sze said.

Good Hope School and Diocesan Girls' School were first and second runners-up.
