Alocal schoolboy-band has won a music contest organised by a  radio station.

Galaxy, a six-man pop-rock band, won the Clean & Clear 903 School Star Contest organised by  Commercial Radio Hong Kong by belting out its original song  Hold You One More Second. The  song has already won an award at a song composing competition held by the radio station.

The band, formed last summer, consists of fifth and seventh formers from St Paul's College, St Peter's Secondary School and TSK Victoria Government Secondary School.

Drummer Kevin Kwan Ke-fei from TSK Victoria said: 'We're extremely excited!'

Learning music at the same institute and having similar tastes enabled them to form the band,  they said.

'We enjoy playing music as a group. The feeling is really great! It's hard to describe in words,' said Vanir Chan Wi-rok, the guitarist.

Derek Hui Wang-yue, vocalist and lead guitarist, a seventh former from St Paul's College, is the composer of the band. He start ed composing songs more than two years ago and has already composed more than 10  songs.

'The ideas for my songs come from things happening around me,' Wang-yue  said. The song Hold You One More Second was inspired by the ordeal suffered by a friend of his.  He usually wrote the songs at night and different feelings and moods influenced his songs.

The band is planning to produce its own record after the public exam. The members said they would use the $5,000 they won at the contest for recording.

The contest was held under various disciplines which involved playing instruments,  solo and group dancing, singing and musical dramas.

A sixth former from SKH St Benedict's School, Gigi Ng So- chi, was voted the most impressive contestant by the audience.  'Maybe traditional Chinese dance is a bit special as people nowadays see hip-hop or jazz dance usually,' said So-chi, who has won many awards at  inter- school dancing festivals.

She performed a solo traditional Chinese dance at the contest. She received her prize from Canto-pop star Andy Lau Tak- wah.

She also commended other participants who performed quite well. She regarded the contest as a new experience.

So-chi said the elegant and beautiful movements of Chinese dance  was not only attractive but also very challenging.

'I have to take part in many dancing competitions and examinations, 'she said.   Dancing has not only boosted her confidence but also strengthened her physically and built her stamina, she said.
